Chicago is one of those rare bands that redefined what rock music could be. With their signature horn section, masterful songwriting, and ability to shift between jazz, rock, and pop, they became one of the most enduring and successful groups of all time.
For this month’s feature, we’re taking a deep dive into one of their most ambitious and experimental albums—Chicago V (1972).

By 1972, Chicago had already made a name for themselves with their jazz-rock fusion and politically charged lyrics. But Chicago V was different—this was the album that streamlined their sound, tightened their songwriting, and delivered their first No. 1 album.
Unlike their previous double albums, Chicago V was a single LP—lean, powerful, and packed with some of their most well-known tracks. It was also their first album recorded at the legendary Caribou Ranch, giving it a warm, rich, and dynamic sound.

🎸 State of the Union – A fiery, hard-rocking track that sees Chicago at their most politically outspoken, calling out government corruption and societal problems.
🌃 Goodbye – A fast-paced jazz-rock track that proves Chicago was still pushing musical boundaries while delivering radio-friendly hits.
Why Chicago V Still Stands the Test of Time
This album was a turning point for Chicago. While they had already established themselves with intricate jazz-rock compositions, Chicago V proved they could deliver tighter, more accessible songs without losing their depth and musicianship.
It was also the moment when Chicago truly dominated the charts, proving that their mix of rock, jazz, and social commentary resonated with a mainstream audience. Decades later, Saturday in the Park is still a radio staple, and Dialogue remains one of the most relevant political songs of its era.
